How To Overcome Writer's Block

What is writer's block | The short meaning for writer's block is a condition where the writer loses their ability to continue their work, the creativity slowing down, and the idea got stuck. In the end, the writers feel dizzy hard to move forward.

If we look forward, there are many factors why writer's block happens, I will share the factor in generally based on my experience as a writer :

6 Factor Why Writer's Block Happens

  • Lack of Resources (references, content information, content element, etc...)
  • Stress (the Major factor that blocks the idea)
  • Perfectionism (there is no perfect draft, that's why we must edit our work later)
  • Condition (crowded space, noisy, etc...)
  • Lazy and Desperate ( writing is a journey you must face the challenge to keep forward right?)
  • Lack of Focus (inconsistent in writing, change the direction before finish the work before)
That's the six writer's block factor that I meet before. As a writer it is normal to have this block condition, every writer has felt the same, the difference is how persistent we are to come out of this bad condition.

Before we can overcome the writer's block, it would be good for us to do these following below:
  • Realize that we already trapped in writer's block: This aspect is important guys, because many writers deny when they stuck in this condition, our mind tries to resist this block, but that does not solve the problem. The best thing we can do is accept the condition and find the solution (I share the solution below)
  • Find the factor of the writer's block: External factors such as condition, no space to write, too busy, or the internal factors (lack of resources, not focus, to perfection, etc...)

How to Overcome Writer's Block

Now, I want to give some short solution how to overcome the writer's block, based on experience and discussion with the authors of course.

1. Find and set up the time before writing

Every writer has a different situation and condition, there is a writer who is more enjoy writing in the midnight, some of them feel free to write in the morning time. Figure it out your perfect time before start writing, it will give you extra energy and the idea much more easy to come out. The point is to find the right moment or build the moment itself.

2. Search References As Much As Possible

The more data we have, that makes the process easier and faster later. Search for the material in all resources, internet, forum discussion, social community groups, movie, books, that related to our works. It will add you with some valuable information, the perspective getting bigger, and makes the process more easy to come.

3. Relax For A While to Recharge Energy

Sometimes writer's block happens as a sign that we need to relax for a moment. There is no wrong to break a moment, try to refresh our mind first, so we can start again with full of energy. Try some vacation or go around with your friends. But don't get too long, remember there's still work to finish yet.

4. Mood Booster With The Favorite Music

Music can build up our mood, right? Sit back for a while and enjoy the instrument to fresh our mind, sometimes music can give us the spirit to keep writing forward. Make a list of the song that boosts up your mood, it will give you fresh energy later.

5. Take Time to Read Books

You need to keep the balance between writing and reading, writer's block can be a sign for us to stop writing and start to read something. It's okay to stop for a while don't push yourself to hard, by reading a book you can add more value, get others perspective, and build up your writing skills slowly but sure

Nowadays writing become more popular with the help of technology. Many platforms help the writer to show their works, but there is a problem beside a writer's block, and that is the creativity block. It looks same but different actually.

What is Creative Blocks

Creative Blocks much more specific than writer's block. It's the condition when we are stuck with the idea, lack of imagination, it looks like there is a huge wall that blocks the inspiration to our mind. We can finish our works but there is no soul doing that. That's because we are stuck in Creativity blocks.

Creative Blocks Solution

  • Try something new in your daily life (different activity, sport, try to do some new hobbies, etc)
  • Try another genre or try to combine it (it will add more creativity perspective for sure)
  • Explore the other creative things (art, photography, fashion, designer, etc)
  • Expand The Mindset (try to understand the differences, learn about the other's culture, etc)
  • Free your Mind (don't drift away with the stigma, opinions or perspectives of the people, but try to understand their point of view.)
That's the best solution to get rid of the creative blocks, to add more spirit I will share some creative quote that is really inspiring.

How To Write A Novel For Beginners

How to Write a Novel for Beginners | Writing a novel is not as difficult as we imagine before. What makes it difficult is our own negative mind and how to get started. Beginners are usually afraid of the failures before they started doing this work.

So, how do we start this now | First thing that you must now that writing a novel is a journey, you must make sure you have a lot of resources (time, imagination, etc...) And the second is dare to start and persistent, these two things are your main tools before start to write a novel project.

5 Things Before Write A Novel

writing tips

You have lots of ideas but confused where do I start the story. To make it simple I will share tips before write a novel, these tips is based on my experience so let's have take a look now :

1. Choose Main Genre
writing genre
This is the first step that every writers do before they started the project, pick your most liked genre, it will help you to build the platform of your story later on. You can combine the genre you pick before too, such as sci-fi combine with action or adventure aspect, or Drama with horror aspect when the story goes on.

2. Create Storyline
writing genre

Creating a storyline is important too, it's just like a compass, keep you focus on the track. To make it easier, create the outline first for each chapter then start to determined action per action in you chapter scene.

3. Set Up The Conflict and Climax of The Story
searching

Climax is a set up scene from many conflict before. When the storyline has been created, you can see the plot of the conflict, gather this plot little by little to set up the climax moment. You can put the climax on the mid-side or at the end of the story you write.

*Example :
Main story idea : About school life dynamic when facing a final test
Conflict : Lack of study resources, poor condition, no room for study, etc...
Climax  : Pass the exam, or failed

Write down clearly too about the climax, how your character pass the exam, or why your character didn't pass the test. Try to make it all look reasonable

4. Realistic Character
character

Many writer build their main character too perfect, they describe the character as good as possible. It's ok to write a charcter white and black clearly but, don't forget about the human aspect, such as weaknesses, ego, emotion, etc.

*Example :
"Jon is a good and famous student, but he is an opportunist too, he always cheat in every test. That's why he can get the first rank on the class."

* Example II :
Main Character : A swordman who are swordmaster too
Main Character Strength : Courage, brave, loyal, humble
Weaknesses : egoistic, clumsy, stubborn

By putting your main character in dilemma situation you can build up the emotion of the reader, make a short note about your main character first, explore strength and the weaknesses, try to combine with the story plot, and must be blend with the storyline of course.

5. Set The Place and Background
fiction world

Set the background that are matches with your genre, it will help you to describe the whole story. You can start to describe the place on the opening side, or even when the story goes on progress. To make things look easier, start with the main place / background, and the supporting place / background

*Example :
Main Idea : School life drama
Main place : High school
Supporting place : main character house, friend house, cafe, mall, pub, etc...

Ok guys that's the first aspects how to write a novel for the beginners, now I want to share more specific about writing a novel.

Step By Step How to Write Novel

1. Good Prologue
writing

A prologue gives early storyline about your story, so the readers can understand about the flows of your story. If in this stage you can't make people interesting, don't expect them to continue read your story. So, the good prologue is a must, it's the important part indeed.

You must make sure your prologue has these element :
  • Progression (show the storyline progress little by little)
  • Curiosity (A short twist element can pump up people emotion)
  • Flowing (all of your words must flow with the storyline)
2. Develop Your Character
Help the reader to understand for your character, visualize and feel the emotion. Describe the character voice, action, emotion things, behavior. But, keep remind on your mind, when describing the character don't get to overrated, and don't describe in one dialogue or one plot, keep the progression flows.

*Example
Main Character : Student High school
Development path : Unpopular student---->Popular student
Progression path :  Struggling in school life, accept the situation, study hard, etc...
3. Point Of View (POV)

point of view
Choose the best perspective in your story, you can choose first person or third person. If your story is a whole big world such as fantasy world, third person POV is  the best for you, because you need describe many aspect of your story. If your world not so big, first person POV is good to choose, it give personal perspective for the people who read your story
4. Meaningful Dialogue

point of view
People get bored when they must read a long dialogue without nothing to show.  Write the dialogue that has a purpose, connected to your next plot. Don't waste a time write a chit-chat dialogue just to show the characte, the dialogue must be meaningful or the readers will get bored for sure.

5. Setting the Plot Story
plot

If we talk about plot, we talk about the foundation of the novel itself. Surely seing beautiful plot is like seeing the whole system. Sometimes a complicated plot makes the plot looks dizzy. Especially when the plot shown the time shifting so quick. My advice: just try slow build up plot focus on the character development and try to connected with your main story.
6. Choose the best Ending

epilogue
Writing ending story is much hard as the opening. Think deeply before you write the ending, because it's the conclusion about your whole story, you must makes everything looks logic and acceptable. Here's some tips to write ending novel :
  • Good Ending (you ended up with joyful moment for your main character)
  • Bad Ending ( Mostly it's a tragic part, main character died, or the villain beat the hero, etc)
  • Twist Ending (It use to be for the series novel book, things that not been solved yet on the whole story before)
Ok that's step by step to write a novel for beginners. Now, I want to share some tips hopefully give some inspiration, here's the tips below.
